The key is the words “fearful symmetry.” It summarized the philosophy of Red John who sees himself like Satan fighting against God and the order of society represented by Jane and the forces trying to capture him amd put him jail. The latter he sees as beneath him and has no compunction about killing them just to clear the field. He enjoys the match of wits between himself and Jane and wants him to be kept on the case. to keep the symmetry, as it were.
